This weekend’s Arts Project of Cherry Grove (APCG) Art Show, on view to the public on Saturday, August 22nd and Sunday, August 23rd, will feature photography by Steven Menendez. This year’s reimagined event will take place inside the air conditioned Cherry Grove Community House with artists and artisans from the Grove, Fire Island communities, and New York City displaying their work for viewing and sales.
“All the images I am exhibiting were taken exclusively in Cherry Grove over the past decade”, Menendez shares with The Queer Review. “Over the years, Cherry Grove and Belvedere Guest House for Men have given me the gift of pursuing my art photography in a way that I could not easily do elsewhere. I was lucky to spend time with John Eberhardt who designed and built the Belvedere in 1957. I am forever inspired by and in awe of his beautiful vision and contribution to the community. I’m so grateful to Cherry Grove which has been a queer haven for so many artists for over a century.”
Steven Love Menendez is an award-winning New York City–based photographer and queer activist whose practice centers on the fine art figurative nude. He honed his artistic vision through photographic studies at the International Center of Photography in New York City. His evocative portraits have been exhibited extensively, with prominent showings at the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art and The Bob Mizer Museum and Photographic Archives, in addition to exhibitions across New York City, San Francisco, Fire Island, Provincetown, and Miami.
Deeply influenced by mysticism, spirituality, and philosophy, Menendez explores the tenderness and intimacy of the human form through serene, harmonious compositions. His work invites viewers to discover a profound intersection between physical beauty and the universal human quest towards enlightenment.
