After teasing us with just the tip of what was in store with his playfully sexy EP back in February, Brooklyn’s indie dance pop king Boy Radio launches his stunning sophomore album Himboism today, Friday, June 13th. The release of the artist’s genre-blurring record—that fuses tech house, liquid drum and bass, and R&B vibes to create an electrifyingly seductive soundscape—marks the official start of Himbo summer. To celebrate, The Queer Review spent the day on the beach and boardwalks at New York’s iconic Coney Island with Boy Radio, dressed in Slick It Up, to catch some rays and channel that Himbo summer spirit, captured in this exclusive photo series by photographer Steven Menendez.

“Himbo summer is hot…everything! Hot dogs, hot pants. It’s really just about being silly. I try not to overthink it too much”, Boy Radio shares with The Queer Review. “I don’t want it to be like a label that means you’ve got to wear pink shorts and green hats, or anything like that. It’s just a mindset of being able to be a little bit silly but also a little respectable too, like, don’t get too stupid! I’m not saying act crazy, go wild. I’m saying be a cute hot dog.”

“Himbo Summer is freewheeling, it’s wanderlust”, Boy Radio continues. “It’s hands in the air when the beat drops. It’s sweaty. It’s silly. It’s summer of love. It’s finding how much joy you can contain into one little jar. Put that in a box in your closet and save it for October, November, and December, because when fall and winter comes around we’re going to want to have a Himbo winter too!”

When it comes to listening the album itself, Boy Radio advises, “Relax. Listen to the whole thing from start to finish. Albums are a journey. It’s an hour of music, one full hour of Boy Radio. So be in my world for one hour, that’s all I’m asking. Just press play on track one and let it ride out. It is a sensual, sonic joy meditation. It is dancey. It’s flowy. It’s boppy. Himboism is dance pop, R&B, liquid drum and bass, house. It’s melodic and lyrical and poetic and futuristic. I want you to nod your head to it. I want you to imagine yourself wearing the most ridiculous superhero outfit and dance to Hypersexxd in your Catwoman outfit. That’s the vibe. How do you see yourself performing these songs and what are you wearing?!”

“It feels so good to have a collection of songs put together in an intentional way that has formed an album”, muses Boy Radio. “I’m so happy that it’s out in the world. I’m happy that I made something that I feel aligned with cosmically. I love the sound and I hope that it inspires others to go and buy the album, not just stream it, buy it, because if you buy it you actually hear it the way it’s supposed to be heard; seamless, one track right into the next. If you listen to it on Spotify, you’re gonna get an ad, and that’s not fun. You’ll get a song and a song, and then it’ll be a commercial, and then you’ll go back to a song. But if you buy it, you’ll actually hear the whole album the way it’s intended. That way, when you come see me do the songs live, you’ll know exactly what’s coming next and that’s the vibe.”

Among Boy Radio’s upcoming live dates, he will be performing at Brooklyn Pride on Saturday, June 14th and will make his solo show debut at New York’s iconic Joe’s Pub on Saturday, August 2nd at 9:30pm.
