Sarah Paulson on upcoming Netflix series Ratched “the queer component is one of love & joy”

At a virtual press conference for the upcoming Netflix series, Ratched, attended by The Queer Review, lead actor and executive producer Sarah Paulson discussed some of the LGBTQ elements of the show. Created by Evan Romansky and developed by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, Ratched is inspired by both Ken Kesey’s novel and the Oscar-winning film adaptation of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. It explores the origin story of the iconic character, nurse Mildred Ratched, portrayed by Sarah Paulson in this 1940s set series which launches on Netflix Friday September 18th 2020.

In discussing her character’s sexuality, Sarah Paulson said: “This is not a story of a woman who is struggling with that identity…Within this show the queer component is one of love and joy, and an opportunity for Mildred for the very first time to feel seen and to explore these parts of her…There is great, great joy in that component for me as a member of the community.”

Yesterday’s Ratched press conference was also attended by other key members of the cast including Sharon Stone, Cynthia Nixon, Finn Wittrock, Jon Jon Briones and Sophie Okonedo and we will publish more of their answers in the lead up to the series launch as well as a full review of the series.
