GALECA: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics has just revealed the nominees for its inaugural annual Dorian Film Awards. The organisation, comprising 280 professional journalists, was founded in 2009 with its Dorian Awards in previous years combining television and film. Lee Isaac Chung’s Minari leads with six nominations, including Best Film and Best Foreign Language Film, followed by Nomadland with five nominations, plus that film’s writer-director Chloé Zhao is also in the running for the group’s Wilde Artist Award honouring “a truly groundbreaking force in entertainment”.
Among the LGBTQ+ films that received nominations are the narrative features Ammonite, The Boys in the Band, I Carry You With Me, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Supernova, Uncle Frank, Filippo Meneghetti’s Two of Us, and the documentaries A Secret Love, Born to Be, and Mucho Mucho Amor: The Legend of Walter Mercado; with Sam Feder’s Disclosure and Welcome to Chechnya receiving nods in both the Best Documentary and Best LGBTQ Documentary categories.

“It’s not a surprise that the films that came out in 2020, one of the country’s most tumultuous years, are fascinating works that feel both deeply personal and subversively political,” says GALECA president Diane Anderson-Minshall. “I’m thrilled that unlike some other critics groups, our members have not relegated Minari—one of the year’s most quintessentially American films—just to the foreign language category. More than anything, Minari and Nomadland show what it means to live with autonomy and self-direction in America today.”
The winners will be announced at the Dorians Film Toast 2021 set to air on the queer streaming platform Revry on April 18th.
