GALECA: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics has just revealed the nominations for its 2022 Dorian film awards. Jane Campion’s queer western leads the pack, with nine nods for The Power of the Dog, including best film, LGBTQ film, director, and three for acting. Jonas Poher Rasmussen’s animated documentary Flee, Rebecca Hall’s 1920s set drama Passing, and Spielberg’s adaptation of West Side Story each received five nominations.
The other best film contenders, alongside West Side Story and The Power of the Dog, are Ryûsuke Hamaguchi’s Drive My Car, Joachim Trier’s The Worst Person in the World, and Lin Manuel Miranda’s Tick, Tick…BooM!. While The Power of the Dog and Flee are joined in the best LGBTQ film category by Paul Verhoeven’s Benedetta, Almodóvar’s Parallel Mothers, and Emma Seligman’s Shiva Baby.
The expanded, gender inclusive best film performance category includes Benedict Cumberbatch for The Power of the Dog, Penelope Cruz for Parallel Mothers, Andrew Garfield for Tick, Tick. . . Boom!, Kristen Stewart for Spencer, and Tessa Thompson for Passing. Among those being honoured for their supporting performances are Ariana DeBose for West Side Story, Robin de Jesús for Tick, Tick. . . Boom!, Colman Domingo for Zola, and Ruth Negga for Passing. While Jane Campion, Lil Nas X, Jennifer Coolidge, Pedro Almodóvar, and Lin-Manuel Miranda are all in the running for the Society’s Wilde Artist accolade.
House of Gucci, Annette, Old, Cruella, and Malignant are all vying for the honour of being named the group’s Campiest Flick of the year.
“You could say the movies and performances chosen by our Society’s members are a reflection of what appeals to the entire trendsetting Queer and Trans community,” said GALECA President Monika Estrella Negra. “As our representation grows in the industry and beyond, expect the Dorian Awards to continue to shine light on the importance, and excitement, of having diverse critical eyes on cinema. There is much work to be done in advancing a variety of voices and images that often go unheard and unseen.”
