Examining the human condition and his own health conditions through facts about the natural world, Sam Morrison is an engaging performer with a broad range of material.
Following on from his critically acclaimed show Sugar Daddy, Morrison is back at the fringe to give us the lowdown on weird science. From ducks with spiral vaginas to hyenas with oversized clitorises, interspersed with material about being diagnosed with ADHD and type 1 diabetes, this is a frenetic hour. Fortunately Morrison is extremely likeable and disarming, so the seeming tangents are still enjoyable if not always laugh out loud funny. Some of the material is more serious – panic attacks, the death of his partner – but it never feels heavy, and his stage presence is always compelling.
It is only fair to say that this particular show had a very odd interaction with an audience member, who seemed to think Morrison had time to just chat. And accept the vial of insulin she had brought. It was managed well, but may have thrown off the rhythm of the performance, as he struggled briefly to get it back on track. He is extremely good at riffing, however, and incredibly good natured, so he was able to work it in.
There is a whole lot crammed into this show, including some very funny observations and some devastating home video. It feels like it could be tighter, as some of the diversions do not wholly pay off, but Morrison is a joy to be in a room with and you will certainly learn a thing or two!
