The inaugural GALECA: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics’ Dorians TV Awards were celebrated in style on Sunday night with a two-hour virtual event broadcast on LGBTQ+ streamer Revry: The Dorians TV Toast 2020. Hosted by talk radio personality and GALECA member Karel, the night included special guest appearances and acceptance speeches from the likes of Laverne Cox, Regina King, Annie Murphy, Hugh Jackman, Janelle Monáe, Billy Porter, John Oliver, Dan Levy, Alex Newell, Margaret Cho, Lea DeLaria, and Chad Michaels.
The final season of Schitt’s Creek won big being named both Best TV Comedy and Best LGBTQ TV Show, while the Best Actress award went to Catherine O’Hara and Best Supporting Actress to Annie Murphy. The series’ creator-star Dan Levy was named both Best Supporting actor and the LGBTQ critics society’s Wilde Wit.
Janelle Monáe, accepting her joint-win with singer-actor Billy Porter for Best TV Musical Performance for their dazzling duet at the start of last February’s Academy Awards, said the experience of performing that night “was a dream” and that, when it came to asking Porter to join her, “There was no other person I could think about sharing that stage with.” She added: “I’m just so grateful that we got an opportunity to be ourselves. Our performance was rooted in community and making sure to amplify all of the marginalized voices, specifically our black and queer community. It wasn’t just about us. It was about all of us. I’m so honored to be honored by GALECA.” Porter returned the affection, thanking Monáe for “putting her neck out for me and making sure that grampa – I – was there with her!”
