GALECA: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics has revealed the nominees for their second annual Dorian TV Awards, with the final season of Pose leading with a total of six nods including Best TV Drama, followed by WandaVision with five nominations, and Mare of Easttown and I May Destroy You each garnering four nominations, while It’s a Sin scored three, plus recognition for Sir Elton John and Olly Alexander’s It’s A Sin duet during the Brit Awards telecast.
“Our group’s nominations are diverse and fresh, signaling the overhaul of invisibility of marginalized communities and the heralding of a new generation of entertainment journalists”, comments the Society’s newly elected president, Monika Estrella Negra.
Pose star and pop singer Michaela Jaé (Mj) Rodriguez will accept GALECA’s LGBTQIA+ Trailblazer Award during the Dorians TV Toast. “There’s a generation behind me that needs to know what transness looks like, and also how we are being represented in the world”, Rodriguez says in the prerecorded two-hour-plus show, “I’m going to keep trying my best and instill hope.”
Olivia Newton-John will unveil the 2021 Campiest TV Show winner, with Tituss Burgess revealing the Best Unsung TV Show winner. Other presenters who will appear during the broadcast include Patricia Arquette, Jennifer Beals, Fran Drescher, Big Freedia, Michael Cimino, Hannah Einbinder, Leyna Bloom, Jesse James Keitel, Josie Totah, Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman, Gottmik, John Lehr, and Jim J. Bullock.
Morgan Mallory, who made it to the blind auditions round of season five of The Voice, has once again collaborated with the Dorians TV Toast presenter Karel on an original song. The rocky, catchy new pop track, Flickering Life, is an ode to television and will debut during the special. Watch a special preview of song below:
“Karel will start producing the Dorians show and say he needs a song, and he’ll shoot me off a set of lyrics,” says Mallory. “It’s very Elton John and Bernie Taupin. He’ll tell me the style of music he hears in his head, and then he leaves me to it. I’m free to write some lyrics of my own, rework others and take the music wherever it leads. The first two shows really challenged me to explore new genres and new orchestrations. This time was no different.”
GALECA’s membership, comprising over 300 US and international entertainment journalists, recently voted to make all Dorian Award acting categories gender-neutral (as they were in the group’s first three years of existence, beginning in 2009), with 10 nominees for Best TV Performance and Best Supporting TV Performance.
The 2021 Dorian TV Award winners will be revealed on Sunday August 29th at 8pm EST / 5pm PST in a special Dorians TV Toast show presented by Karel on Here TV and the PlanetOut channel on YouTube.
