“It’s truly one of the most brilliant shows I’ve ever seen in my life”, comments Bob the Drag Queen, who encourages audience members to attend that night wearing black. “I thought to myself, what if everyone in the audience was Black and/or queer. How amazing would that be? So I reached out to the producers and a friend of mine in the show and said, ‘Can we make this happen?”

Tony-nominated Broadway actress L Morgan Lee on playing Thought 1 in A Strange Loop

L Morgan Lee, who made history with her Broadway debut in A Strange Loop, becoming the first openly trans Tony nominee, shared her thoughts on the evening with The Queer Review. “I think it’s important and it’s great to have. It doesn’t mean that only Black people come to the theatre that night, but it means that it’s one of those nights that celebrates Blackness. With this piece in particular, that’s really useful, because our audiences are typically very much the standard Broadway audiences which tend to skew white. We had a Black theatre night when we did the show at Playwrights Off-Broadway and it was one of my favourite shows because people were so vocal and so excited about it. As a cast, we love that rush of energy coming at us when we’re doing the show, it really makes things cook.”
