GALECA: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics has just announced the winners of its 15th annual Dorian TV Awards with special honors for Umbrella Academy star, actor & author, Elliot Page who was named the group’s LGBTQIA+ TV Trailblazer, while comedian Wanda Sykes took the Wilde Wit Award, and Jennifer Coolidge won the GALECA TV Icon Award recognizing “a uniquely talented star we adore”. Coolidge also took the Dorian for Best Supporting TV Performance – Drama for memorably reprising the role of Tanya in the second season of Mike White’s hit HBO series, The White Lotus.
There was also love from LGBTQ Critics for the final season of Succession, which snatched the Dorian for Best TV Drama and saw one of its stars, Sarah Snook, winning Best Performance – Drama. Creator-star Quinta Brunson’s gentle mockumentary series Abbott Elementary on ABC won the Dorian for Best TV Comedy for the second consecutive year, while in the Comedy performance categories, Bridget Everett was recognized for her work as the lead in HBO’s Somebody Somewhere—named Best Unsung TV Show— and Ayo Edebiri won the Dorian for her supporting turn in FX’s The Bear.
GALECA members seemed to show a yen for persistent, dryly witty women across most of the performance categories. The journalists chose Somebody‘s Bridget Everett as best comedy lead, Jennifer Coolidge for best supporting drama performance for her fateful turn in The White Lotus, and Ayo Edebiri of FX on Hulu’s frenzied sandwich shop comedy The Bear. Taking Best TV Musical Performance? Surprise: Ariana DeBose for her maligned—but perhaps in retrospect, fun and sweet—rap tribute to Angela Bassett and other nominees at the BAFTA Film Awards last March.
