On Monday, January 17th, GLAAD—the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization—received the Television Academy’s prestigious Governors Award at the postponed 2023 Emmys ceremony, in recognition of its “profound, transformational, and long-lasting contribution to television”. Two days later, GLAAD revealed its own honourees in the 35th Annual GLAAD Media Awards, which included The Queer Review in the Outstanding Blog category.
Honouring media for “fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of LGBTQ people and issues”, the GLAAD Media Awards is the world’s most visible LGBTQ awards show helping to accelerate acceptance both at home and globally. During a year when lawmakers across the United States introduced a record-breaking number of bills targeting transgender youth and access to transgender healthcare, many of the nominees in the 35th Annual GLAAD Media Awards centre trans people and issues “in timely, nuanced, and empowering ways”.
Among the 310 nominees across 33 categories are films and TV shows featuring LGBTQ stories and artists such as, Monica, All of Us Strangers, Bottoms, And Just Like That…, Frybread Face and Me, Fellow Travelers, Heartstopper, Kokomo City, Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, Red, White and Royal Blue, Blue Jean, and The Stroll. In the music categories, Billy Porter, boygenius, Brandy Clark, Janelle Monae, Kim Petras, Miley Cyrus, Renee Rapp, Sam Smith, Troye Sivan, and Victoria Monet all received recognition. Luchina Fisher’s short film The Dads on Netflix and Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé distributed by AMC Theatres are among the 11 projects selected by GLAAD to receive Special Recognition Awards for “spotlighting diverse segments of the LGBTQ community in innovative ways”.
This year’s Barbara Gittings Award for Excellence in LGBTQ Media, which honours “a pioneering individual, group, or community media outlet that has made a significant contribution to the development of LGBTQ media” will be presented to +Life Media. Founded in 2019 by AOMedia and journalist Karl Schmid, +Life is a multi-platform brand that produces content focused on ending HIV stigma, bringing the conversation about HIV into the mainstream and “turning positive into a plus.”
“For 35 years, the GLAAD Media Awards has provided the global stage for LGBTQ creators, alongside industry talent and leaders to be celebrated and supported”, comments GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis. “At a time when the LGBTQ community is under attack by false narratives and misinformation, when less than half of American say they are familiar with transgender and nonbinary people, and when one in five Gen Z adults identify as LGBTQ, this year’s nominees powerfully reflect the realities of LGBTQ existence today, in our communities and around the globe. Amid a summer of union strikes across Hollywood, the stakes have never been higher to maintain the progress of LGBTQ visibility and representation across all media, from film, television, music, journalism, publishing, and more.”
The nominations for the 35th Annual GLAAD Media Awards reflect work published, released, or broadcast between January 1st and December 31st, 2023. The GLAAD Media Awards ceremonies, which fund GLAAD’s work to accelerate LGBTQ acceptance and visibility in media, will be held in Los Angeles at the Beverly Hilton on Thursday, March 14th, 2024 and in New York City, at the Hilton Midtown, on Saturday, May 11th, 2024.
