At the 33rd Annual GLAAD Awards, where a special sneak peak trailer was presented to attendees, creator Stephen Dunn spoke exclusively with The Queer Review about his vision for the new series, and what the original had meant to him. “Queer As Folk was such an incredibly important show to me”, shared Dunn. “It was my sexual awakening and it was my first exposure to the queer community. It’s always been really important to me to tell queer stories in my work, and I came up with an idea to re-envision Queer As Folk for a new generation. I went to Manchester and I met Russell T Davies pitch to my my take about a community rebuilding in the face of a tragedy. He loved it and saw it as a way to continue the legacy of his series. It’s been a dream come true and it’s such an honour.”

Stephen Dunn on reimagining Queer As Folk for a new generation

Dunn was determined to create a diverse show, reflecting as much of the LGBTQ+ community as possible, which is partly why he chose The Big Easy as its setting and shooting location. “The show is set in New Orleans”, continues Dunn, “which is one of the most unique, diverse intersections of queerness maybe anywhere and that was intentional, because I think that’s what Queer As Folk for this generation really needs to be. The queer community is as diverse as literally the entire world, so it’s impossible to represent everyone and every facet, because we exist everywhere in every culture. But I’m really proud of of the diversity that we have in our show because I think there’s a lot of characters in this series that have rarely been seen on screen before. That’s something that felt important to me because the show is actually a reflection of my queer family in so many ways.”
