Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics reveals nominees for 14th Dorian Film Awards

With awards season now in full swing, GALECA: the Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics has just announced the list of nominees for its 14th annual Dorian Film Awards. Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s breathtaking Everything Everywhere All at Once, featuring a touching storyline between a mother (Michelle Yeoh) and her queer daughter (Stephanie Hsu), leads with nine nominations including Film of the Year and LGBTQ Film of the Year, alongside Terence Davies’ Benediction, Nicholas Stoller’s Bros (co-written by and starring Billy Eichner), Elegance Bratton’s The Inspection, and Todd Field’s Tár, which racked up seven Dorian nods. As Andrew Ahn’s Fire Island and John Logan’s They/Them didn’t receive a theatrical, or a digital theatrical release, those titles weren’t eligible for Dorian Awards nomination.

The LGBTQ Documentary of the Year category saw nominations for Laura Poitras’ All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, Chase Joynt’s Framing Agnes, Brett Morgen’s Moonage Daydream, Magnus Gertten’s Gimme Some Truth: Nelly & Nadine (Auto Images), and Rita Baghdadi’s Sirens (Frameline). All The Beauty and the Bloodshed and Moonage Daydream are also contenders for the Documentary of the Year
prize alongside Sara Dosa’s Fire of Love (Neon, National Geographic), Ryan White’s Good Night Oppy (Amazon Studios), and Daniel Roher’s Navalny (Warner Bros.).

The gender-neutral performance categories sees recognition for Cate Blanchett and Nina Hoss in Tár, Michelle Yeoh, Stephanie Hsu, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Ke Huy Quan in Everything Everywhere All at Once, Brendan Fraser and Hong Chau in The Whale, Viola Davis in The Woman King, Mia Goth in Pearl, Paul Mescal in Aftersun, Jeremy Pope in The Inspection, Angela Bassett in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Janelle Monáe in Glass Onion: Knives Out, and Keke Palmer in Nope.

Cate Blanchett, Janelle Monáe, Michelle Yeoh, and Keke Palmer are all also up for the society’s Wilde Artist Award honouring “a truly groundbreaking force in film”, alongside Bros’ Billy Eichner. In the running for this year’s Timeless Award—recognising an “actor or performer whose exemplary career is marked by character, wisdom and wit”—are RuPaul, Nathan Lane, Tom Hanks, Sir Anthony Hopkins, and Bill Nighy. The films nominated for Campiest Flick of the Year are Babylon, Bodies Bodies Bodies, Elvis, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, and Pearl. The winners of this year’s Dorian Film Awards will be announced on February 23rd, 2023.
