LGBTQ Critics announce winners of 14th Dorian Film Awards – Everything Everywhere All at Once named Film of the Year

GALECA: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics has just revealed the winners of its 14th Dorian Film Awards, with Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s breathtaking Everything Everywhere All at Once named both Film of the Year and LGBTQ Film of the Year. Distributed by A24, the genre-defying movie which features a touching storyline between a mother (Michelle Yeoh) and her queer daughter (Stephanie Hsu), went on to win seven of the nine Dorians it was nominated for.

The Daniels took Dorians for both directing and screenwriting, while Michelle Yeoh won Film Performance of the Year, with Supporting Film Performance of the Year going to Ke Huy Quan, edging out two of his Everything co-stars, Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu, who were nominated alongside him.

Hsu didn’t miss out entirely though, with the LGBTQ critics group naming the actress its Rising Star of the Year. Everything also took the Visually Striking Film of the Year trophy, while Michelle Yeoh notched up a second Dorian this year with the Wilde Artist Award that honours a “truly groundbreaking force” in entertainment.

Laura Poitras’ unflinchingly personal portrait of Nan Goldin the artist and activist, All the Beauty and the Bloodshed—described by The Queer Review’s James Kleinmann as “a poignant work of cumulative power”—won the Dorians for both Documentary of the Year and LGBTQ Documentary of the Year.

Fresh from her win at BAFTA on Sunday night, Charlotte Wells’ deeply moving reverie on a father-daughter relationship, Aftersun, took the Unsung Film of the Year Dorian, in recognition of “an exceptional movie worthy of greater attention.”

GALECA’s affectionately bestowed Campiest Flick of the Year Dorian was awarded to the compelling candy coloured horror prequel Pearl starring and written by Mia Goth, which was hailed by The Queer Review’s Glenn Gaylord as “one of the year’s best films”. The Dorian for Non-English Language Film of the Year went to S.S. Rajamouli’s spectacular historical adventure RRR.

Following her memorable role in last year’s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, singer-songwriter, actress, producer, and fashion icon Janelle Monáe was named LGBTQIA+ Film Trailblazer. The Society will announce the recipient of its 2023 Timeless Star career achievement at a later date. 

Lukas Dhont’s Close made GALECA: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics’ 10 Best Unsung LGBTQ Films of the Year list.

While voting for the winners, GALECA’s 400+ members were also asked to name an LGBTQ-themed theatrical release which they felt deserved more attention, resulting in a list of the 10 Best Unsung LGBTQ Films of 2022 (in alphabetical order): Anais in Love, Benediction, Close, Firebird, Girl Picture, Great FreedomPeter von KantPlease Baby PleaseSpoiler Alert, and We’re All Going to the World’s Fair.
